The Point: the promised Holy Spirit has come to empower our faith and instruct our lives
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls. Thank you for joining me as we share God’s word together.
Today is a special celebration. It is called Pentecost. Pentecost means fifty. When Jesus was about to ascend into heaven, he promised his disciples that the comforter, the Holy Spirit, would come and be with them forever. Fifty days later the Holy Spirit filled the lives of all the followers of Jesus.
In some ways the Holy Spirit is like these batteries. (show batteries) You can’t see it but these batteries have power. (let children mention some things batteries power) Put the batteries into a flashlight and it will cast a light. Put the batteries into an electric car and the car will race around. Put batteries into a clock and it will keep time and ring when the alarm is set. Batteries have the power to bring all kinds of things to life.
When the Holy Spirit comes into our lives we receive the very power of heaven. In the power of the Holy Spirit we know that God exists and loves us. The power of the Holy Spirit awakens faith in our lives and gives us strength to obey Jesus, our Savior and Lord. The gift of God’s Spirit reveals to us the truth of God’s word. The Holy Spirit holds us together in Christ’s church and empowers our church to grow. We may not even recognize the power of the Holy Spirit working in us, but if we have faith, even a little faith, that is evidence of the Spirit’s work in your life. Our faith would quickly fade without the power and encouragement of the Holy Spirit.
Batteries are just fine to power toys and tools. But when it comes to our lives, only the promised Holy Spirit can empower our faith and instruct our lives.
Prayer: Let us unite our hands and hearts together as we pray. Lord Jesus, you have kept your promise. The Holy Spirit has come to us. Give each of us a fresh anointing of the Holy Spirit that our faith may be stronger and that we might reflect the light of your love to the world. In the name of our Savior Jesus we pray. Amen.
