Purpose
Children's sermon
Object:
Objects like a fly swatter, a cup, a back scratcher, a spoon, a clock, etc.
“Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (v. 21b)
Good morning boys and girls,
I'm practically bursting with joy to see you in this hour. Know why? I get to show my love for you by telling a good news story from the Bible.
But first, what do I have here? (show series of objects) I want to know what is the purpose of, for example, a fly swatter? (children answer)
What is the purpose of a cup? (children answer)
What is the purpose of a back scratcher?
A pen? A clock? A church?
Every object I have shown you has a purpose. Can you point to an object here in our sanctuary (room) and tell about its purpose? (children respond)
One day Jesus gave a talk in the synagogue about his purpose. A purpose is like a job description. In Jesus’ case, in telling his purpose, he told the people his mission plan.
A mission is what you do in life.
Have you thought about what you would like to be when you grow up? What do you think you would like to do and be? (children respond)
Jesus told the people what his mission would be. Since he was anointed by the Spirit he would bring good news to the poor. What do you think is good news to the poor? (children respond)
Jesus said his purpose would be to free people, give sight to the blind and let everybody know God's grace had come.
Then Jesus amazed everyone by saying “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” What do you think Jesus meant? (briefly, flesh this out)
What is a good purpose for you? You may not know what work or occupation you will do someday but you can know you will practice things like telling others about the good news of Jesus. Things like being kind, helpful, forgiving, and loving.
Prayer: Jesus thank you for coming to this earth and fulfilling your purpose. Amen.
