Can anyone tell me what the word "neglect" means? It's a word in today's scripture reading. Listen. (read the verse) Does anyone have a guess? (listen for responses)
There are lots of words in the world, and every once in a while I come across a word that I want to understand better. When that happens, I use this. (hold up the dictionary) This is a dictionary, and it helps people get more information about words. Here's what "neglect" means: "to ignore, disregard or forget to give attention to something." It's like when you're supposed to remember to take care of something, but you forget.
Listen to our verse again. (read the verse) Now what do you think it means? (responses)
In today's lesson the Apostle Paul reminds us how we should live. He says we should not neglect to do good. In other words, we should pay attention to being good, and we should remember to share what we have with others. He also says that when we do this we are doing things that please God.
We don't always remember to do good. It's hard to do the right thing and be good, especially when other people don't act that way to us. Sometimes sharing is even harder. We have things that are important to us, and it's hard to share them with others. What if other people don't share with us too? What if I give all my stuff away and nobody ever shares anything with me? How come I have to be the nice one?
I have to do the right thing because God has asked me to do it. If we love God, then we have to think about doing the things that make him happy. The Apostle Paul is reminding us that God's way for us is better than our own way. Plus, we will be making the people around us happier if we consider their needs and think of ways to help and share with them.
I know it's easy to forget to do the right things. That's why we need help remembering. Don't neglect to do good and share what you have.
Prayer: Dear God, forgive us when we forget and when we don't want to reach out to others. Help us remember to do the right things. Amen.
