Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him. (v. 11)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) How many of you have ever seen a cartoon where the main character has an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other? (allow answers) What do the angel and devil say to the character? (allow answers) The angel gives the character good advice; the devil gives the character bad advice. The character has to choose which shoulder he wants to listen to. He has to choose whether to make a good choice or a bad one. Even though both the angel and devil are giving him advice, he can only listen to one of them.
That's what our Bible verse is about today. Our reading talks about when Jesus was tempted by Satan. The devil asked Jesus to prove that he was God's Son, but Jesus refused to play Satan's game. Finally, the devil got tired of trying to tempt Jesus. The Bible says, "Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him." What can we learn from this verse? (allow answers) Well, first of all it tells us without a doubt that Jesus is God's Son. Angels themselves came and took care of Jesus! But it also tells us something important about ourselves. Even though the cartoons make it look like we can listen to both angels and devils at the same time, that's not really true. Even Jesus could only listen to one or the other. We can't listen to both. We have to choose.
That can be hard to understand. Let's compare it to this flashlight. If we turn on the flashlight, the light is like the advice of angels. It's good advice! It's telling us things that we should do. But what if a devil starts to whisper in our ear? (put hand in front of flashlight light) The devil gets between us and the light. And when the light is blocked, we can't see anything clearly at all. Amen.
