Respecting God's House
Children's sermon
Object:
Some sort of whip made out of rope.
In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.
Good morning boys and girls or maybe I should say, “go—o-od morn—ni—ing bo—y-s a—nd gir—l—s.” I’m a little nervous after reading the story about Jesus at the temple this morning.
Wow! Was Jesus unhappy or what? I didn’t know that Jesus had a temper and that he could get so angry that he would drive out of the temple all of the people and animals that he found there. Jesus swung his whip and turned over tables and yelled at the top of his voice. I never read anything like that about Jesus before and I hope I never have to again.
What made Jesus so unhappy? (Let them answer) What if you came to church this morning and you found people selling their sheep and cattle? What if you saw someone sitting in the corner covering their face and hiding their money like they knew they were doing something wrong? Maybe a few would be playing their instruments and others were showing off their new clothes so that they could sell them right here in church. Our church would look a mess and it wouldn’t smell very good either.
I don’t think we would like it but that is because we have been taught that this is a very special place. How special is it? (Let them answer.) That’s right, it is one of the most special places in all of the world. Do you know who makes it special? (Let them answer) That’s right, God has made it special. That’s why Jesus was so angry that he lost his temper and made everyone leave so that it could be cleaned up and made special again. We should always remember that our church is God’s house and made special by Jesus’ presence. Amen.
