Rest in Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
a bed pillow or blanket
The Point: We can find rest in Jesus.
The Lesson: Thank you girls and boys for coming up and sharing this special time together.
Do you ever get tired? (let children answer) Sure you do. Maybe you are even tired right now. When I get tired, I love to take a nap with my favorite pillow. Do you have a favorite pillow or blanket? (let children answer) I brought my pillow with me this morning. Not to take a nap but to show you. When I put my head on my pillow, I know it's time to rest. I always feel better after I get some good rest. I not only feel better, but I work better and play better. When I am rested, I am a better person.
Matthew tells us today in our reading that through Jesus our rest is important too.
When we are weary and feel like life is really heavy, Jesus wants to give us rest. Not by laying our heads upon a pillow but by going to him in prayer. Sometimes we may be so tired from playing all day that we don't want to take time for our bedtime prayers. Jesus says: "Come to me, and I will give you rest." When we go to Jesus in prayer, he comforts our hearts and rest comes from knowing that Jesus is with us. When Jesus is with us, he will help us to carry the burdens of life.
When you are tired, curl up with your favorite pillow for some needed rest. When you feel like life is hard and difficult, go to Jesus curl up to him in prayer, and he will give you rest and lighten your burden.
Closing Prayer: Let us unite our hearts in prayer: Jesus, you know that sometimes we are tired and in need of rest so that we may continue to walk with you. Help us to rest in you and then empower us to continue the work of our kingdom. Be upon us as we guide our children along your path. Amen.
