The Right Treasure Chest
Children's sermon
Object:
2 treasure chests, a heart on a stick, hearts for each child
Hello kids,
Thank you for joining me for this message I have just for you.
Tonight is Ash Wednesday. On Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, we put ashes on our foreheads. Why? We are thinking about what we truly love. Ashes show we are sorry for loving the wrong things. We are sorry for our sins. Are there are things you are sorry about? (children share)
Things I am sorry for are _______________________
Look. I have two treasure chests. (show treasure chests)
I also have a heart on a stick. (heart is valentine shaped)
This chest we will call ETC. That means Earthly Treasure Chest. (show chest)
This chest we will call HTC. That means Heavenly Treasure Chest. (show chest)
Jesus once said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
(Hand out a heart/valentine to each child)
My question is this: where will our hearts go? (wave heart around in the air)
Where, where, where? (wave toward one chest and then the other)
In treasure chest ETC we find earthly treasures. Money, jewelry, toys, play stations, IPhone, gold, silver, pets, houses, and cars. (show objects as convenient)
In this treasure chest we also find greed, hatred, selfishness, ugliness, and guilt.
In this HTC Treasure chest, we find heavenly treasures. Look. Here we find God's love, love for our neighbors, mission work, churches, helping all in need and an endless amout of other gifts from the Holy Spirit. Love, Peace, Joy, Hope and Forgiveness.
Now children, where will your heart go? To the ETC or HTC? (wave heart, put in HTC, the children also place hearts in HTC) Great! That's just like Jesus said. (all together) “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”)
Prayer: Dear Jesus, help us to put our hearts in the Heavenly Treasure Chest. Forgive us when we don't. In your love we pray. Amen.
