Rules for Life
Children's sermon
Object:
rules for any children's game (e.g. Candy Land)
The Point: God has given us rules on how to live our life.
The Lesson: Good morning, children. Thank you for coming forward to share this time together.
This morning I have brought with me the rules for how to play the board game Candy Land. Have you played Candy Land? (get responses) The rules explain what the game is all about. With the rules in hand we know what we can do and can't do. Rules guide us in playing the game so that everyone will have a chance to win. In fact, if we didn't have the rules everyone would do what they wanted and then there would only be chaos, and the game would be no fun. Rules are important to playing a game. If everyone plays by the rules, the game is fun and everyone can enjoy it.
Did you know that there are rules for living life too? Those rules are recorded in the Bible. That is one of the reasons it is important to read the Bible. God gives us rules so that we can enjoy life together with him and one another. They are God's gift to us. In the second book in the Bible, God gave us ten rules so that we can journey together in life. The rules tell us that there is only one God, about his name, and God's day. They tell us that we need to honor our parents and family. We should keep life sacred and protect it. We should keep our promises, and we shouldn't steal or tell lies. And we should be happy with what we have.
In our lesson for today we heard Jesus say that we will keep all these rules for life if we would "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind... and... Love your neighbor as yourself."
The next time you play a game play by its rules, remember there are rules for living your life too. They are all summed up in two rules: Love God and love each other.
Closing Prayer: Let join our hands and hearts together in prayer. Lord Jesus, thank you for the gift of life and for the rules that will help us to live with you and one another. Anoint us with your Holy Spirit so that we may truly love you and our neighbors. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
