Children's sermon
Object:
a blanket
Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. (v. 28)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you today? (allow answers) How many of you have ever had a security blanket or a blankie like this one? (show blanket; allow answers) Tell me about your blanket. Who gave it to you? Do you still use it? (allow answers) Maybe you don't have a security blanket, but you have a favorite stuffed animal or toy that you like to keep close to you when you are scared. Why is it special to you? (allow answers) How does it make you feel? (allow answers)
When do you want your security blanket or toy? (allow answers) We want our security blankets when we feel upset. We want them when something in the world around us has made us scared or sad. They help us calm down when something has frightened us or made us uncomfortable.
Do you think adults have security blankets or only kids? (allow answers) Adults may not carry around a blanket or a teddy bear but sometimes they have security blankets, too. Maybe their security blanket is their home. Maybe their security blanket is a savings account at the bank. Maybe it's a photograph of their family. Adults feel uncomfortable and frightened sometimes, too. And sometimes they have to pull out their security blanket -- or photograph or credit card or whatever they have -- to remind themselves that everything is going to be okay.
Our Bible verse today kind of talks about security blankets. It says: "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." Who do you think said that verse? (allow answers) God says those words to us. He tells us that when we are frightened or worried -- those times when we want to keep our security blankets close to us -- we can come to him. God is our ultimate security blanket. No matter how scary the world may seem, we will always have God there to love us, guide us, and protect us. And do you know what the best part of that is? God is with us all the time. We never have to leave him at home. He never gets lost under the bed or in someone's luggage. God is always with us. He makes his home in our hearts.
Next time you feel scared or lonely and maybe when you want your security blanket, remember that we have something better than a blankie. (show blanket) We have God to watch out for us. He will help us manage our problems and he will keep us safe. Amen.
