Second Chances
Children's sermon
Object:
A piece of fruit (presenter's choice – apple, banana, peach, walnut, fig, etc.)
“Sir, let it alone for one more year...”
Happy day children,
It's lovely to see you today. How are you? (children respond)
I am so happy to have you join me for this message from the Bible.
First I want to ask you what is your favorite fruit? (children respond) Why is _____ your favorite fruit? (each child responds as he/she chooses)
My favorite fruit is ___________. Know why? It's because _______________.
Jesus told a parable about a certain fruit tree. It was a fig tree. Let's suppose it was an apple tree and this apple tree could talk. The conversation might go like this: “Apple Tree why are you not producing any apples? If you don't produce any apples I will have to cut you down.” Apple Tree says, “Oh no, Mr. Gardener. “I'm sorry I haven't produced any apples this year, but if you will fertilize me and loosen the soil around me I will have apples galore for you next year.”
Jesus' parable is about a second chance. It is grace, a gift of starting over. You and I are given time to change from not bearing fruit, to bearing wonderful, delicious fruit.
To bear fruit we trust in Jesus. To bear fruit, as baptized believers, we show love to others. Are there ways kids can bear fruit? (children respond) How about inviting a neighbor to church? How about becoming a friend to a kid who is new. How about forgiving a bully when the bully stops being mean? How about feeding a sandwich to a homeless person? How about giving dimes and dollars for missionary work? How about bearing fruit by serving as an acolyte, an usher, a reader at worship? Others?
When we forget to bear fruit, God calls us to repent and change.
God's grace gives us second chances.
Are you ready to bear fruit for God? (children respond)
Prayer: Dear patient Jesus, we want to bear fruit for you. Help us to begin. Amen.
