Secretly
Children's sermon

Object:
A beautifully wrapped present or gift bag
What do you think of when you see a beautiful present (let kids respond) Maybe birthdays...
Let's imagine that it is your mom's or dad's birthday and you want to give them something very special. We are often anxious for them to open our gift first and to notice our amazing gift and kindness. But in our Bible lesson today it says in Matthew 6:1, Be careful not to do your "acts of righteousness" (or acts of kindness) before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your father in heaven."
We all like to get noticed but it is more important to be noticed by God. In Mathew 6:4 it speaks about our giving being done in secret. It is the idea of doing kind things when no one is there to tell you "good job". So maybe you take the trash out without anyone asking you to do it. Or maybe you "secretly" unload the dishwasher. No one may say thank you -- but you know that God has seen it and that puts joy in your heart. His smile is enough!
How do we apply this to our lives?
This week ask God to show you ways to care about others. But don't make a big deal about it. Be on God's secret mission team and surprise others. Maybe a post it note on their pillow or set the table without being asked or thanked. God's eyes are watching.
