Seeing God
Children's sermon
Object:
a small hand mirror
Good morning! Did any of you see God this morning when you came into church? (let them answer) This is God's house, isn't it? (let them answer) Good, I wanted to make sure that I was in the right place. If you came to my house, I would be there to meet you, wouldn't I? (let them answer) If I visited your house, I would meet your mom, your dad, you, and maybe a brother or sister, wouldn't I? (let them answer) Then why don't I see God when I visit or worship in his house? (let them answer)
Where is God? Did he leave his house to be with some other people? Did God take a vacation and is spending some time in Florida? Could he be at the hospital healing someone or making someone who has been crying happy? Does anyone here know where God is?
While you are thinking about this, let me have you try something. (select one of the children and have him/her stand up) Will you breathe for me? Are you breathing? (let him/her answer) Does anyone see her breath? We don't think you are breathing. We can't see your breath, so therefore you must not be breathing. Let me try someone else. (select another child) Will you please breathe for me? Will you try a little harder? Did anyone see her/his breath? (let them answer) We will try one more person. (select the third one)
I know you are breathing, but I just can't see your breath. Let's try one other thing. Will you please take this mirror and hold it under your nose and breathe? (position the mirror so that the breath makes a mark) Wow! I can really see your breath.
See if you can understand what I am going to tell you. Do you remember that I asked all of you if you had seen God this morning when you came to church? (let them answer) No one did. But I know that God is here. As a matter of fact, God is everywhere -- we just can't see him. The Bible teaches us that no one has ever seen God the Father.
But the Bible also teaches us that when we have seen Jesus or listened to his teachings in the Bible, it is the same thing as seeing God the Father. Jesus is like the mark on the mirror. We can't see you breathe, but we can see your breath on the mirror. We know that God is here, there, and everywhere because Jesus showed us what God was really like.
The next time you see a mirror I want you to think about how Jesus showed us that God is with us all of the time and everywhere in the world.
