Sharing our faith
Children's sermon
Object:
I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good we may do for Christ. (v. 6)
Object: a printed e-mail message that can be read to the children
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought with me a message that I received on my computer. This message was sent by a good friend. Do you have any friends who send you e-mail? (let them answer)
The message that was e-mailed to me says that I should live my life in a Christian way. My friend asked me to share my life with others so that they will know Jesus is my Savior. Do your friends know that you are a Christian? Do they ask you about Jesus? (let them answer)
When I read this message it reminded me of a Bible story. There was a man named Philemon who owned slaves. Slaves were people who were owned by certain wealthy people. One of Philemon's slaves was named Onesimus. Once, after delivering a message, Onesimus ran away. He found Saint Paul in prison and stayed with him. Paul knew that Onesimus would be in trouble for not returning to Philemon. Paul wrote a letter to Philemon and asked him to forgive Onesimus and to welcome him back as a fellow Christian. Paul remembered when Philemon first became a Christian and how good he felt after claiming Jesus as his Lord. Now, Philemon could do something good by welcoming Onesimus home as a brother in Christ. Paul asked Philemon not to punish Onesimus.
People who love Jesus make great friends. Christian friends are always honest. They share the good things they have with each other and are ready to forgive when something is not right. "I want to be your brother in Jesus," means that we both believe in Jesus and follow his teachings.
Paul said Philemon should be effective. Do you know what effective means? (let them answer) It means that we should do what ever we are asked to do in a very good way. For instance, if there is a stranger in our church we should welcome him and invite him to worship with us. To be effective, we should invite him to sit with us. We should share our bulletin and hymnal. When the service is over we should introduce him to the pastor. Then we should invite him to come back to church next week. This would make us effective.
The e-mail I received tells me all of this and asks that I share it with you so that you can share it with your mom and dad and all of your friends. Paul sent letters. We can also send letters or e-mail telling our friends about the joy of being a Christian, or we can even just tell our friends about the love of Jesus and how they can be his brother or sister, too.
