Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy. (v. 8)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) How many of you have a baby brother or sister at home? (allow answers) Do you remember when that baby was born? (allow answers) What was it like? (allow answers)
Maybe you don't have a baby brother or sister at home, but you might have a baby cousin, or you might know someone who recently had a baby. Do you remember what it was like to wait for that baby? (allow answers) We start preparing for a baby long before it is born. Parents often begin choosing names for their baby before they even know if it is a boy or a girl! People have baby showers for mothers-to-be. They give gifts for the baby that will soon be born. (show blanket)
Think about it -- people did that before you were born, too. People were excited to see you come into the world! They didn't know if you would be a boy or a girl; they didn't know what color your eyes would be, or if your hair would be straight or curly; they didn't know what you would look like, they didn't know if you would prefer chocolate or vanilla ice cream. They didn't know anything about you yet -- but they still loved you. They loved you before you were even you! What do you think about that? Does that make you feel good? (allow answers)
Our second reading talks about loving someone without seeing them. The verse is talking about Jesus. Even though we cannot see Jesus, we still love and honor him. We still believe in him.
Just like you loved and believed in your baby brother or sister before they were born -- before you ever saw them -- so we should love and believe in Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Just because we can't see him doesn't mean that we shouldn't celebrate him with as much joy as we would celebrate a new baby coming into the world.
Next time you see a new baby, think about all the love that people gave that baby before they even saw him or her. And remember that we should love Jesus with that same kind of happy, excited, trusting love. Amen.
