Ah ... the feeding of the 5,000. Today's story is a classic. It is recorded in each of the four gospels. One day over 5,000 men, women and children gathered to hear Jesus teach. They were hungry, so Jesus created a satisfying feast out of only five loaves of bread and two fish. For some people, today's story is a new one. For others it is a story that is well-worn and familiar. The challenge for those people is to make the story stay meaningful despite its familiarity.
The miracle is significant and obvious. How could such a small amount feed so many to such satisfaction? A little less obvious is the significance of the feast itself. People sharing a meal together is a foundational image in the Christian faith. Breaking bread together is a symbol of unity and fellowship. Few things are as intimate as a meal lovingly enjoyed by people in communion with one another. The story of the 5,000 also hints at the story of the Last Supper and the promise that all people will be fed by the body and blood of Jesus.
For today's activity, share a feast together. Have the only goal of the feast be to spend time getting to know one another. Enjoy one another's company and fellowship together. One of the deepest desires of Jesus' heart is for his people to gather together and enjoy one another in an edifying, uplifting way. When we break bread together we are sharing an intimate moment together and, just like in today's story, Jesus is with us in the feast.
