Some rules for fishing
Children's sermon
Object:
a fishing pole (or something to do with fishing)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever gone
fishing with someone? (Let them answer.) I brought a fishing pole
with me. One thing about fishing is that you have to be very
patient. That means that you have to be prepared to wait for the
fish to bite. I want to tell you the story about a girl your age
and her father, who went fishing. The girl had never gone fishing
before. The two went out on a quiet stream in a boat. The girl's
father showed the girl the fishing pole and how to cast it. Then
the two began to fish. Their poles were in the water for the
longest time before anything happened. The girl asked her father,
"Why aren't we catching anything?" The girl was losing her
patience. She wanted to give up. Just as she was ready to say,
"Let's stop and go home," her father said, "Let's move to another
spot and try it again." The girl answered, "But, Dad, we've
fished all day and haven't caught a thing. But, if you say so,
I'll try it again." Right after they moved, they began to catch
more fish than they knew what to do with. They became excited as
they caught all those fish.
A story similar to this happened to Jesus and Peter. Peter was a fisherman who had fished all night and hadn't caught one fish. Peter lost his patience with fishing. Then Jesus came along and told Peter to try fishing in another spot. Peter replied, "Anything you say, Lord." Peter began to fish where Jesus suggested and began to catch more fish than he knew what to do with.
Jesus told Peter that from then on Peter would be catching people instead of fish. Peter immediately became one of Jesus' disciples. The next time you lose your patience, remember Jesus and Peter. Peter lost his patience. Jesus told Peter to try one more time. Peter followed Jesus' advice and caught more fish than he knew what to do with.
