Someone's Coming
Children's sermon
Object:
A message in a large envelope
“The One who is more powerful than I is coming.” (v. 7a)
Good morning boys and girls,
Happy Advent! Happy Advent?? Why do I wish you sweet children a Happy Advent?
Did you know that Advent means “somebody is coming?” Well, who is coming you might wonder. (knock on the door) Oh, oh, who is that? Could it be the mail carrier? Fed Ex? UPS? (knocks again) Come on in. (presenter has an imaginary conversation with
an imaginary person) Oh hello mail carrier – I see you have a special delivery
message for me. (receives large envelope) Thank you mail carrier. I wonder who in the world sent this large envelope with, I suppose, a very important message.
(opens large envelope and reads the message) The message says simply, “Someone's
Coming – get ready.” Signed - John the Baptizer.
Now boys and girls who is it that is coming that John wants us to prepare for? Get ready for whom? Is it your grandparents? Is it Father Christmas? St. Nicholas of Myra? Is it Santa Claus? Any clue anyone?
(children will answer “Jesus.”)
You're right. This, the second Sunday in the Advent season, we learn that John the Baptist appeared on the scene with a message. His message was, “Somebody, very important, is coming, so get ready. Prepare your hearts and your lives.”
When the people wondered if John was speaking of himself he quickly said, “The One who is coming is more powerful than me.”
So how can we get ready for Christmas in a way that does not distract from it's true meaning? (children answer)
Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank you for sending John the Baptist. We hear his important message to get ready for Christmas in a true believing way. Help us change our lives. Let Christmas be about celebrating your birth and little else. Amen.
