Spread Jesus' Kingdom
Children's sermon
Object:
a swimsuit
The Point: Listen to what Jesus asks of us and do it.
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls! How many of you take swim lessons? (let children answer) That's an important thing to do. Why is it important to know how to swim? (let children answer) I took lessons too. We lived near a bay, and my father insisted that I learn how to swim. There was a problem though: The lessons were early in June and in the morning the water was cold. The ice had only been off the bay for a month, and the days were not very warm yet. My father knew it was important for me to learn to swim for my safety and enjoyment in the water. It is important to listen to your parents and to do what they ask you to do. Because I learned to swim, I made sure my sons learned too.
This morning we heard Jesus ask his disciples and us to do something.
Jesus wants us to do three things. First we are to go! That means we are not to just sit around and wait. He had been crucified, died, buried, raised from the dead, appeared to others, and now he was giving them his final orders before returning to heaven. Second we are to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (the Holy Trinity). In baptism we are received into God's family. As a part of God's family we believe that God is the Father, who created all that is, Jesus is God's only Son who gave his life to save us, and the Holy Spirit is God's power helping us to live as his children. Third Jesus wants us to teach everything he has taught to others. Together Jesus is counting on us to spread the good news of God's kingdom.
It is important to listen and to do what our parents tell us. It is even more important to listen to Jesus and to follow his instructions: go, baptize, teach. The next time you grab your swimsuit to enjoy the water, remember the importance of learning how to swim. And each morning as you wake up, remember that Jesus has asked you to help spread his kingdom.
Closing Prayer: Let us pray: Jesus you have asked us to go and welcome people into our family of faith. As we learn and teach, help us to grow as your children. We worship you Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
