Tell The Truth
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
a Bible
The Point: Telling the truth doesn’t mean that it will be easy or fun
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls. Thank you for joining me as we share God’s word together. How many of you always tell the truth? (let the children answer) All of you. That’s great. It is important to always tell the truth. If you want people to trust and believe you, you need to be truthful. Sometimes it is hard to tell the truth. Sometimes you might be afraid of telling the truth because it could get you into trouble. If you spilled something on the carpet or broke a glass and your parents ask if you did it, tell the truth. Sometimes when we tell the truth about a friend, our friend might become angry with us. If you have a friend who is a bully to others, you could tell him the truth that he is mean to others. Instead of thanking you, your friend might become angry with you. He didn’t want to hear the truth.
That happened to Jesus in our Bible reading today. Jesus is in his hometown and he went to his synagogue to worship. A synagogue is a church. The Bible tells us that Jesus always went to church. Jesus read from Isaiah that the time will come when God’s Messiah would come with good news. At the end of the reading Jesus said, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
The people that knew Jesus as a child growing up in Nazareth didn’t accept him as God’s messenger of forgiveness and hope. So Jesus said, “I tell you the truth.” Jesus told them that their faith was lacking. They were rejecting God’s word. Because they didn’t like the “truth” that Jesus shared, they wanted to hurt him. Jesus spoke the truth and walked away.
The Bible is God’s word of truth to us. (show the Bible) Sometimes it isn’t easy to hear and accept what God wants us to do and what we are not to do. But that doesn’t change God’s word because it is the truth. The truth is that God loves us so much that he sent Jesus to save us. That is the truth. It is a part of God’s word, the Bible.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hands and hearts together as we pray. Jesus, you came to share the truth with us. We are sinners and need a savior. Jesus, you are our Savior. Help us to receive you and to follow your guidance. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
