Thanksgiving in June
Children's sermon
Object:
a Thanksgiving turkey decoration
Good morning, boys and girls. What does this turkey remind you of? (Let them answer.) It reminds me of Thanksgiving. June isn't the month for Thanksgiving. When do we celebrate it? (Let them answer.) We celebrate Thanksgiving in November. This Thanksgiving turkey makes me think of this morning's lesson. The lesson tells us that we should be thankful all year long.
I want to tell you about a girl about your age who was thankful. This girl went to Sunday school. Her teacher asked the students in the class to name all the things that they are thankful for. The girl thought of a list. I want to tell you what was on her list. See if these things might be on your own list. Here's what the girl was thankful for. (As you name these things, count them on your fingers.) She was thankful for her family, her home, her church, her Sunday school, her pets and her school. She was able to list six things that she is thankful for. Can you name some things like this that you are thankful for? (Let them answer.) You've added some important things.
It's important to take time to think of all the things that you are thankful for, even if it isn't Thanksgiving time. Our lesson this morning tells us something important about giving thanks. It says that as more people learn about Jesus, the more we all have to be thankful for. This week I want you to think about all the things that you are thankful for. As you do that remember to treat others the way Jesus would treat you. Be friendly and helpful to others. When you do that you are telling others about Jesus' love. You are telling others about Jesus. When you do that we are all thankful.
