Things I Love the Most
Children's sermon
Object:
Family photo, pet photo, a cross, a bible, a toy, jewelry, a candy bar, and the like and 3 paper “God” hearts for each child
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”(v. 34)
Good morning boys and girls,
What fun and how exciting to see you today! How are you? (children respond) (presenter comments on the children’s responses)
Now I have something to give you and to show you. (give each child 3 hearts)
(next, presenter shows visuals – photos etc.) These items are all considered treasures.
To treasure something is to love it. To treasure something is to find it in your heart.
Jesus once said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
So what are some treasures you really, love? Let’s play a treasure hunt game and find out. Let’s call the game, “Finding My Best Treasure.” Okay? (children respond)
Look carefully at these visuals. Now decide where to place your hearts. You have three choices for three different items. (children place hearts on or near their choices)
(presenter comments on the choices made) Was it hard or easy to make your selections?
Why did you place your heart where it landed? (children respond)
Here are my personal choices. (presenter places his/her own hearts in or near selected choices) This is what I treasure and have in my heart.
The best choice of all, is that God chooses and treasures you! (presenter pins a “God” heart on each child) When you change the word “treasure” for “love” in John 3:16, the message sounds like this: “For God so treasured the world,” that is, “for God so treasured you that he gave us his only begotten Son.”
Isn’t that something? And when we know we are treasured by God and that God gave his son for us, it is much easier to know what treasures we have in our hearts.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for choosing us and making us your precious treasure. Help us to love and enjoy the “best” treasure that lies in our hearts. Amen.
