Time Out!
Children's sermon
Object:
Referee’s whistle
“And ought not this woman….be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?” (v. 16)
Good morning children,
I have a sports question. What is your favorite sport? (children answer)
When you are playing a sport and hear this sound (blow whistle) what are you supposed to do? (children answer) Or when you see this sign (presenter demonstrates “time out” sign making a “T”) Yes, that’s right. When the referee blows a whistle or someone makes a time out signal, everybody stops playing. Stop. Take a rest. Get new instructions. Wipe the sweat from your face. Get organized. Get ready to play again.
God gave us a wonderful “time out.” It’s called sabbath or Sunday. After six days of work it’s “timeout!” Stop what you are doing. Rest. Relax. Regroup. “Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy.”
It was on the sabbath when Jesus met this woman who was bent over like this: (everybody bends over into an uncomfortable position) She had been crippled and bent over for eighteen years. How do you think she felt? (stay bent over) (children respond)
Jesus laid his hands on her and said, “Woman, you are set free from your ailment.”
Immediately, she stood up straight, and began to praise God. (all stand up straight)
But the synagogue leader got mad at Jesus. He complained, “There are six days on which work ought to be done.” Jesus retorted back, “Don’t you give your donkeys water on the sabbath? Surely this woman I healed on the sabbath is the best thing one can do even on the sabbath.” When Jesus said this, the religious leaders were put to shame.
They realized God gave them and us, a wonderful “timeout” — to stop what we are doing, to rest and worship and do good deeds for others.
So how can children help and heal others on our sabbath — Sunday?(children respond)
Prayer: Jesus, healer and helper, show us how to help, heal and free people from their troubles, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and all days of the week, and especially on Sunday. Amen.
