A long paper list of excuses all rolled up.
Have you ever been asked to do something that you didn't want to do? Maybe your mother told you to clean up your toys or room. Or maybe you were told to unload the dishwasher. We often have a long list of excuses (unroll the paper) because we think we have better ideas.
In Luke 9:57 it tells the story about one day as Jesus was walking with a friend and his friend told him that he wanted to go with him wherever he went. He wanted to follow Jesus! But there were some other people that made up excuses for why they couldn't go with him. They were distracted with other "important" things of life, like burying their dead and saying goodbyes. For us today those other important things might be our careers, our work, our family, our friends. While those things are important, they are not the most important. Jesus needs to be at the top of our list. (Write Jesus at the top of the paper.)
In another place in the Bible, Matthew 6:33, it says that we are to, "Seek first God's kingdom his righteousness and all these things will be added to you." If God is not most important to us now, then why do we think he will be the most important to us when we die. Satan will try to make other things take our attention but being with Jesus and following Him needs to be first on our list and in our lives.
How can we apply this to our lives?
You can start today by letting God know he is your priority. Maybe you can turn off the computer, the phone, the TV and spend time with Jesus and reading his letter -- the Bible -- to you. He wants to spend time with you.
