Touch You First!
Children's sermon
Object:
A paper heart torn in two and a similar heart that is whole
“At this they were overcome with amazement.” (v. 42b)
Happy Sunday, (or whatever day this message is used) boys and girls,
I hope you are well and happy today. But if you are tired or crabby, that's okay too.
God loves us no matter what and that's what counts. So good to see you.
Have you ever played “touched you last?” (children answer) “Touched you last” goes like this: you touch someone and then try to avoid their touching you back. You win when you touch somebody last. Let's try it. (game is played as appropriate)
There are two amazing stories from Mark's gospel about touching.
A little girl, twelve years old, (anybody here today who is twelve?) got very ill. Her dad, Jairus, desperate, begged Jesus to come and make his dear little daughter well.
Jesus said okay. But on the way to Jairus's house, a woman who had an illness for twelve years reached out from the crowd and touched Jesus clothes. She believed by touching Jesus' clothing, Jesus would heal her. And she was healed! Meanwhile, the little girl died. When Jesus got to her home, he went into her bedroom. He simply touched her hand and said, “little girl get up.”
And immediately, Jairus' little daughter got up and walked about. She was healed and full of life again. Many times Jesus touched people in the Bible and they were healed.
I have here two parts of a paper heart. This heart is torn. Let's pretend I have a magic wand. I wave my magic wand and “viola” the heart is healed like this. (show heart that is whole) Jesus doesn't do magic. He does something much more real and powerful. He actually heals hearts and bodies and even dead people. His touch is greater than magic.
When the people saw how Jesus' touch healed, they were amazed!
When a friend of yours is hurt or sick and crying, your kind words and a gentle touch can make a big difference. Can you think of someone who needs a touch of love?
Prayer: Kind and loving Jesus, touch each one of us with your healing power. Help us to not play “touch you last” but practice “touch you first” with words and love that brings healing to others. Amen.
