A True Friend
Children's sermon
Object:
Jar of candy to be shared with children
Hey, who wants to be my friend? I have candy to share! I am so happy that you are all my wonderful friends!! (Pass out candy)
Has this ever happen to you at school? Everyone wants to be friends with you if you are a kid that has cool stuff and shares it with others. But when all the candy is gone or all the cool stuff disappears who remains your true friend?
In our story today Jesus had a similar experience. He had been doing lots of cool things -- miracles and healings. But now Jesus was arrested by the police and he was up very late at night -- troubled and praying. There weren't friends around then... in fact it says , "Jesus returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. (Matthew 26:40) What a faithful friend! In fact, it says "Then all the disciples deserted him and fled." (Matthew 26:56)
Would we have stayed true to Jesus when all the "treats" were gone and hard times came? Would we have allowed fear to overcome us?
Jesus promises to never leave us or forsake us (give up on us). But do we leave him and run away from him when things don't go how we wanted? Are we a true friend of Jesus?
How do we apply this to our lives?
Jesus understands your disappointment when you feel deserted by a friend. May you learn to be a faithful friend to others, not for what you can get from others, but be like Jesus ? do the right thing and be a giving friend. A true friend is one that stands by his friend when no one else will. Jesus is our friend forever!
