The True Light
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers (preparation for class): Prior to class create your
own example of a decorated "light of the world" bag. During
class, students will make their own bag, based on your example.
To make your bag, take a small sack. Cut as many holes in it as
you wish. You may want to make designed in it like stars, crosses
or other Christian symbols. Next decorate your sack. You may
color it, add rickrack or other material to it. Place a
flashlight under your sack and turn the flashlight on in a
darkened room.
Teachers: Today you may show students how Jesus lights up the world. First, summarize or read the entire lesson. If you summarize it, focus on Christ being the true light. Then close the curtains of your Sunday school room and briefly turn out the lights. This shows the world in darkness. Before you turn on the lights tell students that soon each will represent Jesus lighting the world. Next turn the flashlight on under your own "light of the world" sack.
After showing your example, pass out the paper sacks, scissors and other material. Let your students decorate their own sacks. When finished, turn out the lights again and let each one turn on the flashlight inside her own sack.
Parents: Your child created a "light of the world" as the story states in John's gospel. Let your child demonstrate how it works. Cooperate by getting a flashlight and going to a darkened room where the light of the world will shine.
