Two bright morning stars
Children's sermon
Object:
a picture of Venus
Good morning, boys and girls. I want to talk about two bright morning stars today. The first one I want to tell you about is a planet. (show the picture) It's usually the first star you see at night and the last star that you see early in the morning when the rest of the stars have disappeared. It's the brightest object in the sky except for the sun. Does anyone know which planet is called the evening star and the bright morning star? (let them answer) It's Venus, the next planet closest to earth toward the sun. We haven't really known much about Venus until the last twenty years or so. How do we find out anything about a planet without going there? (let them answer) We find out from telescopes and satellites and space probes. We also learn about a planet from history because people wrote about many of the planets hundreds of years ago. Venus has so many clouds above it, that we weren't really sure what was under the clouds. Venus is so close to the sun and all the clouds hold in all the heat, that it makes it so hot that the rocks get red at night. There are rolling plains and some mountains and volcanoes. But the air cannot be breathed by humans on earth.
Our lesson today is about another bright morning star. Would you like to guess? This one's a person. (let them guess) This bright morning star is Jesus. Instead of shining in the sky early in the morning, Jesus shines in our lives. We find out about Jesus through history, just like we do the planets. We also find out by reading our Bibles. The stories of Jesus are all through the New Testament. In the Old Testament there are more stories of prophets telling that God was going to send Jesus to the world. Many of the stories about Jesus tell how he loved all kinds of people and cared for them. The love of Jesus is what we should remember first thing in the morning and the last thing at night. Jesus is our bright morning star.
