Children's sermon
Object:
a snow globe
"Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe." (v. 28)
Good morning, boys and girls! How many of you have a snow globe at home? (allow answers) What do you do with a snow globe? (allow answers) You shake it! How would you feel if you lived in a snow globe? (allow answers) It would be scary! It would be like living in a place with lots of earthquakes. Earthquakes are scary when the ground itself starts to move. When the ground is moving, it feels like there is nowhere safe to go! Sometimes we hear about earthquakes on the news. Do you remember hearing about any earthquakes? (allow answers) There are earthquakes in California or in South America. In January, there was a very big earthquake on a small island called Haiti. Do any of you remember hearing about that earthquake? (allow answers) The earthquake in Haiti made lots of buildings fall down. Many people lost their lives in the disaster. People from other countries -- like the United States -- went to Haiti to help clean up the destruction.
Most of us will not experience an earthquake like the one in Haiti or that happen in California. However, we might experience other kinds of "earthquakes." Sometimes we experience things that shake us up. Something that we thought we understood might not make sense any more. When someone we love dies, it can be an earthquake experience. If we move to another school or city, that can be an earthquake experience. Can you think of any other things that might be earthquake experiences? (allow answers)
We might think that our home will always be there but what if we move? We might think that our friends will always be there but what if we get in a fight? Sometimes the things that we count on end up disappointing us. That can be what causes an earthquake experience.
In the end, almost anything that we think is safe can be shaken apart. But there is one thing that will never be shaken. Do you know what that could be? (allow answers) The one thing that can never be shaken is God's love for us. Isn't that good to know? (allow answers) God's love gives us a "kingdom that cannot be shaken" -- he promises that someday we will live with him in heaven! That is a promise that will not shake apart, no matter how much the earth quakes or people let us down or we move schools or homes. Living on earth might be like living in this snow globe, but God's promise is firm. Hallelujah! Amen.
