The Very, Very Good Shepherd
Children's sermon
Object:
Photo, sketch or painting of Jesus as the Good Shepherd
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (v. 11)
Good morning boys and girls,
Have you ever seen a sheep? (children answer) What do sheep look like?
Have you ever seen or touched a little lamb? How does if feel? (children answer)
When Jesus was a little boy, and also when he was an adult, there were many flocks of
sheep around Palestine where he lived. He might have played with little lambs or helped a shepherd feed a flock of sheep. Jesus might have even worn a warm tunic made out of a sheep's soft wool.
One day when Jesus was speaking to the crowds he reminded them that they were like sheep that needed a shepherd. What does a shepherd do? A shepherd guides the sheep. He feeds them, protects them, and cares for them.
Now let's play a fun “Yeah – Boo” game about sheep and shepherds.
When I say something about what a good shepherd is like you say either Yeah or Boo!
Here we go:
A good shepherd cares for his flock. (children answer – Yeah)
A good shepherd runs away when a hungry wolf appears. (Boo)
A good shepherd is like a worthless hired hand. (Boo)
A good shepherd knows his sheep by name. (Yeah)
A good shepherd loves his sheep. (Yeah)
A good shepherd is willing to die for his sheep. (Yeah)
“This good shepherd,” Jesus says, “is me! I am the good shepherd!
You are my little lambs, my sheep bucks and my ewes.
I'll take care of you now and forever.”
Prayer: Thank you dear Jesus for being the very, very good and best shepherd of all. Take care of me, my friends, my family and this church. Amen.
