“Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.” (v. 38)
Good morning girls and boys,
Hello and happy morning. I am so glad to see you today. I have a really great message to tell you about from the Bible. Put your thinking caps on. Ready? Here it is!
Have you ever wondered if dogs go to heaven after they die? When a favorite puppy or kitty dies, what happens to them? (children respond) Kids, like you, ask that a lot. (children respond) Some answers are: “I hope so. I don’t know for sure. I wish it to be true.” (discuss as needed) We would like it to be true that our pets go to heaven wouldn’t we?
But a bigger question is this: What happens when a person, like a loved one, dies?
We are very sad aren’t we? But you know what? We believe, like Jesus was raised from the dead, believers too will be raised from the dead. The word is resurrection. Let’s say the word together: “rez-er-reck-shon.” (children respond) Resurrection! Super job! Resurrection is like this butterfly. (presenter explains the process of metamorphism)
The Sadducees in Jesus time did not believe in a resurrection. Let’s say their name together. “Sad-you-see.” (children respond) Sadducee. Great!
So what do kids and adults believe about what happens after we die?
We who are “Children of the Resurrection” as Jesus calls us, recite in the Apostles Creed, “I believe in the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.” Let’s say that together. (presenter and children recite along with the congregation)
Jesus had a fierce discussion with the Sadducees. Jesus pointed out that God is not of the dead but of the living. “Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob who died, are alive.” “People in heaven cannot die anymore,” Jesus said, “because they are Children of the Resurrection.” You, boys and girls and I, and all believers here, are Children of the Resurrection. Know what? We can tell others when they are sad and crying when someone dies, “they are Children of the Resurrection.” That will put a smile on their face!
Prayer: Just as God raised you from the dead, dear Lord, comfort us in believing we too shall be resurrected on the last day. Amen.
