We "fall short ..."
Children's sermon
Object:
a key and a stick (or a ladder)
I have a problem. There is a door that needs to be kept
locked and I have only one key. I need to hide the key in a
place where nobody can find it. How can I do that? Hmmm ... I
know! I'll have one of you put the key up there. (Here point out
a place impossibly high.) All you have to do is take this key
(at this point, give the key to one of the children) and place it
up there. Okay -- do it! Please don't climb on anything.
I knew that wouldn't work. We are all too short to reach up there. We all "fall short" in trying to reach that high place. One would have to be very tall indeed to reach that high spot!
In a way we all "fall short" of God's glory as well. None of us is the kind of person we could be. We "fall short" because of our sin. Sin is that which gets between us and God. Sin can keep us from our God, who loves us so much.
The good news is that Jesus helps us overcome our sin. He is like this long stick (ladder) that helps us reach up very high. I could never reach as high as where I said we should put the key, but with this long stick (ladder), we can all reach up very high indeed.
Jesus helps us with our sin because he forgives us. Even though we "fall short" he makes us tall. Even though we fail, he gives us success. We call Jesus our friend and he is also our Savior. He is the one who helps us and saves us.
Dearest Jesus: Thank you for being our Savior and friend. Amen.
