John the Baptist is humbled by Jesus’ request to baptize him. John sees himself as the stand in place holder until Jesus arrives. Once he does John is more than happy to hand over the ministry. Jesus, however, wants John to use his expertise and experience to serve Jesus’s ministry. Baptism is what John is good at after all, it’s right there in his name. He has spent his ministry baptizing others. He probably has a super awesome liturgy and Jesus wants to be a part of that. This story teaches us that God calls us to use what we are good at to help Jesus’ ministry.
