What about you?
Children's sermon
Object:
A poll sheet with questions such as -- "What is your
favorite color?"
(Begin by asking the children the question [or questions] on
your poll. Record the responses.) I have just conducted a poll
and found that ... (summarize your findings). We call this a
poll. A poll asks people questions. Many times polls are used to
help us guess who might win an election or they tell us what most
people think about things.
Jesus polled his disciples once with a simple question: "Who do you say that I am?" Jesus wanted to know their opinion -- but it was much more than that. Jesus wanted to know what his own disciples believed about him.
That question Jesus asked a long time ago is the same one we ask today. Each person must make a decision about who Jesus is. Was Jesus just a good man? Was he a great man? Was he a great teacher? Was he a wonderful preacher? Might Jesus have been a prophet? Was Jesus perhaps a fraud? The way we answer the question is important for each of us.
We as Christians believe that Jesus was the Savior -- the Son of God -- who died for our sins so that we might have life eternal. That is what Christians believe -- but each of us must answer for ourselves.
Thank you for giving me your opinion about (whatever the poll was about). Jesus wants to know what you think about him. That is an answer that only you can provide to Jesus.
