What Fun To Be Free!
Children's sermon
Object:
Bird cage, presenter makes a cardboard cross into a key combination, an inflated helium balloon, photo of Martin Luther
“So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.” (v. 36)
Good morning lovely children,
Do I have something exciting to show you today? Are you ready? (children respond)
Look — what is it? (show bird cage) When we sin, we lose our freedom. Sinning makes us end up in a cage. (open cage door) Sin is doing wrong things. Sin is believing wrong things. Sin hates God. Sin puts us in jail. (put inflated balloon in the cage) (close and lock cage door)
So how do we get out of the cage?I have a cross like the one Jesus died on. See I have made this cross into a key. (show cross/key) The key opens the cage door. (open cage door) (Let helium balloon float upward)
It is God’s Son, Jesus, who opens the cage door and lets us out. When free, we fly.
How about that? (children respond)
This demonstration is fun because today is Reformation Day.
Can you say “Ref-for-may-shun?” (children repeat)
Reformation day is about reformer Martin Luther. (show photo) Martin Luther helped Christians long ago and also today, to discover freedom from their cages.
Would you rather be locked in a cage or floating freely around and upward? (children respond)
Up, up and away! Just like thatJesus frees us.
So we remember today, how Martin Luther helped all Christians, including kids, rediscover Jesus’ freedom from their cages. “Thank you Martin Luther.”
But most of all, we say “thank you” to Jesus for making us free. We say “thank you” for that freedom which began when you and I were baptized. In baptism we were made children of God. We were set free and have no need to go back to jail.
Prayer: Thank you, Heavenly Lord, for Martin Luther and the Reformation. Most of all thank you for Jesus dying on the cross in order to free us from our sin. Help us live as free as a helium balloon floating away, led by the Holy Wind (Spirit). Amen.
