What Spills from Your Heart?
Children's sermon
Object:
A bucket with water in it
The Point: Whatever is in your heart will spill as life bumps into you.
The Lesson: Thank you, boys and girls, for coming up to share this time with me.
I have with me a bucket. As you can see it has some water in it. Now if I was carrying this bucket and you were to bump into me, what would spill from the bucket? Right, water. Only what is in the bucket will spill from the bucket.
In our lesson from Mark Jesus tells us that what is important is what flows from our hearts. People in Jesus' day were saying that it is what you eat and what you do that pleases God or not. Jesus says, "No. Those are only traditions. It is what is in your heart that truly counts."
Traditions and laws are important because they help us to encounter Jesus and remind us that Jesus is our Savior. It isn't our actions that save us. It is the actions of Jesus that make us children of God. If we truly believe that Jesus is our Savior, then he will fill our lives and our actions will reflect Jesus not ourselves or our traditions.
When our hearts are full of Jesus, then forgiveness, love, and peace will spill from our lives when life gets bumpy. Jesus doesn't want us to only follow rules and traditions. He wants us to place our lives and hearts into his care. Jesus wants our faith in him to so fill us that we will be spilling out Jesus' light and love wherever we go. We will follow rules and traditions because we want to please Jesus. However, it is what comes out of our lives that is truly important because that is how we worship and reflect that we are children of God in Jesus. Fill your life with Jesus, and only things that are good and right will spill for your life.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Jesus, we pray that you will fill our hearts and lives with your forgiveness and love. Take from our hearts anything that is not from you. Wherever we go may your amazing love spill out to our families and friends. Jesus, may our lives overflow with your joy and peace. Lord, in your redeeming name. Amen.
