What A Suprise!

Object:
A bag of wrapped up surprise packages (pack of gum, a tablet, a bottle of bubbles, etc.)
Today I have a bag of surprises! How fun surprises can be! There is the thrill of surprise and wonder. In our Christmas story today we also have surprises. I have to wonder if Mary and Joseph were really thinking she would have the baby on this trip or if it caught them by surprise a bit. Maybe the journey caused the baby to arrive early?!
It must have been a surprise to them that, "there was no room for them in the inn" (Luke 2:7). That kind of surprise is not such a pleasant one. They most likely knew there would be lots of people but it could have taken them by surprise that there was no vacancy anywhere. Sometimes surprises force us to trust God more.
Then as the night went on ...
"Shepherds were just keeping watch over their flocks" (Luke 2:8)
and they were taken by surprise to say the least.
"An angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them." (Luke 2:9)
That was certainly the most amazing surprise they had ever experienced or expected.
But even more of a surprise was to hear that a Savior had been born. People had been waiting a long time for this but now it was actually happening. How Mary and Joseph must have been pleasantly surprised to have visitors -- the shepherds coming to see them with this new baby. They had to have felt pretty alone and yet God surprised them with people to celebrate with them.
We have a God of surprises! The journey with God is a very exciting one. May we awake each day with an anticipation to all that God wants to do in our lives.
How do we apply this to our lives?
My surprises in this bag are so small compared to the kinds of surprises God may place in your life. But may it can be a reminder of how great and full of surprises our God is. May we live with anticipation of God's surprises. We need to hold on tight and trust Him and not get upset.
(Let them each take a surprise at the end of the church service)
