Children's sermon

Object:
Birthday noise makers, balloons, a sign that says "Surprise!"
How many of you love birthday parties? Have you ever been to a surprise birthday party? Often people will hide behind couches, inside closets and then when the person walks in the room everyone jumps out and yells, "Surprise!" They may blow horns or toss balloons. That is sort of like our story today in Matthew 24:42 when it talks about when Jesus will return. In Matthew 24:42 it says,
Therefore keep watch because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. And then in verse 44 ,"So you also must be ready because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him.
Surprises can be exciting but also can be scary if you aren't expecting them. People who are not expecting or believing that Jesus will return are going to be scared when he returns. But if we are living close to Jesus, we can be waiting every day with anticipation that today might be the big day and wanting that day to come.
How Do We Apply This to Our Lives?
So let's not be caught by surprise or fear. We meed to live each day of our lives being so ready to see Jesus. Surprises can be great celebrations. That is what we want when Jesus returns, a wonderful surprise instead of a terrible embarrassment of how we are living. Will he find us being selfish and mean or will Jesus be so delighted in how we are living our life.
So let's go back to our seats with noise makers and when our pastor walks in, jump up and yell surprise and blow your horns to wish him a great day. May we look forward to the surprise hour when Jesus will return as well.
