What's a martyr?

Good morning! How many of you know who John the Baptist was?
(Let them answer.) Does anybody know what happened to John? Did
he die of old age in a rest home somewhere? (Let them answer.)
No, he was killed. Wasn't he? King Herod killed him by cutting
off his head. Why did the king do that? Was John a bad person?
(Let them answer.) No, John was a good person. He preached about
God and called on the people to repent. He baptized a lot of
people and told them that Jesus was coming to save them from
their sins. Herod didn't kill him because he was a bad person.
Herod, who was an evil man, killed him because John was doing
what God wanted him to do, and Herod didn't like that.
There is a name for a person who dies for God. Does anybody
know what we call a person who dies for God? (Let them answer.)
We call that person a "martyr." John was a martyr because he died
only because he was doing what the Lord wanted him to do. Evil
people throughout history have killed God's people because they
don't want them to do God's work. Do you think people are still
being killed today because they are Christians? (Let them
answer.) Yes, they are. In many parts of the world today, people
are being killed just like John was because they are trying to do
what God wants them to do. There are still many martyrs today.
Let's say a prayer asking God to protect our brothers and sisters
around the world who are in danger because they are Christians.
Dear God: We ask You today to watch over and protect all of our
brothers and sisters who live in parts of the world where they
are in danger because they believe in Jesus. Amen.
