Who Is Jesus to You?
Children's sermon
Object:
yourself
The Point: To believe that Jesus is our Savior is to seek and to follow him
The Lesson: Thank you, boys and girls, for coming up to share this time with me. As you know I always bring an object with me to help me make a point about Jesus. Do you know what the object is today? I have nothing in my hands. There is nothing around me. The object this morning is "Me."
Who do you say I am? Your pastor. You are right. I am the pastor of our congregation but that doesn't make me "your" pastor. That is your decision to make. If you decide that I am your pastor, I am thankful and filled with joy and responsibility to be your shepherd. That is what a pastor is -- a shepherd that helps to encourage and guide people in their lives of faith. But note, it is not enough for you to call me your "pastor," you need to want to listen to my guidance, understand my teachings, and seek to be guided by my words. That is why being a pastor is a very serious calling.
Today in our reading from the Bible, Jesus asked the same question of his followers. Jesus asked, "Who do you say I am?" Peter's answer was right on the mark. "Jesus, you are the expected Messiah (that is Savior)." But then Peter begins to tell Jesus what he should and shouldn't do. It is not enough for Peter or for you and me to simply say that Jesus is our Savior. We are to seek to know Jesus, to love Jesus, and certainly to follow Jesus wherever he would lead us. Only then can Jesus truly be our Savior: Your Savior and my Savior.
That is what Jesus meant when he went on to tell Peter and the rest of his followers that we must let go of our wants in this life in order to seek what Jesus wants for us. If we reject Jesus for the things of this world, he will reject us when he comes again. Or we can accept the love and guidance that Jesus has for us now, then he will accept us when he comes again.
As your pastor I want to encourage you to always seek and follow Jesus. Then Jesus will truly be your Savior and Lord.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Lord Jesus, we proclaim you our Lord and Savior. We pray that you would give us the gift of your Holy Spirit that our confession of faith may be seen in all our words and actions. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
