Wild Man Healed
Children's sermon

So he went his way, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.” (v. 39b)
Good morning boys and girls,
I love seeing you here today. Are you happy to be here in God's holy house? (children respond) Great! I have a scary, wild story from the bible to share with you. Are you ready to hear it? (children respond)
There's this wild man! You can just see his long black scraggly hair. He's got a dirty matted beard. He wears no clothes. He lives in the tombs in a country of the Gerasenes. He is a crazy man. They tie him down with chains. (show chains) He breaks them. Crunch! He runs away into the woods. The people are afraid of this wild, crazy man. His name is Legion, which means many. He is controlled by many evil demons! Look out!
What would you children do if you saw him coming after you? (children respond)
When Jesus came along, the demons in this man were afraid. They recognized Jesus as the son of the most high God. The demons in this crazy, wild man shouted out, “What have you to do with us Jesus? Don't force us to go back to darkness. Let us leave this man and enter a herd of pigs.” Jesus said, “So be it.” The demons flew into the pigs and the pigs ran into the water and were drowned. The crazy wild man settled down. He became well. He was healed.
The man realized it was Jesus who made him well. It was Jesus who cast out the demons within him and healed him. He was grateful. He asked if he could follow Jesus. Jesus told him kindly, “Go back to your hometown. Tell everyone there what God has done.” So he went his way, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.
Boys and girls, that's some story isn't it? (children respond)
Have you had a time when you were afraid of something bad? (children respond)
Are there evil frightening things happening in life today? (children respond)
Yes, there are evil powers today. But Jesus has the power. Jesus still heals.
Prayer: Dear Lord, when we are afraid of evil, give us courage to believe in you. Amen.
