A Witness for Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
a driver's license (or other form of ID)
Object: a driver's license (or other form of ID)
The Point: As children of God we are to point to Jesus.
The Lesson: Good morning girls and boys. Thank you for coming up to share this moment together.
Today I brought with me my driver's license. Why do people need a license? (let children answer) It says that I can lawfully drive a car. But it is important in many other ways. What other information is on a driver's license? (let children answer) On my driver's license, you can find my weight, my eye color, and my picture. When someone asks who I am and wants proof, I give them my driver's license. My driver's license is an important way to prove who I am.
In our reading this morning from John's gospel, some Jewish leaders in Jesus' day go to a man in the wilderness, because they want to know who he is. "Are you the prophet Elijah or the Messiah?" they asked. John says, "No, I am not the Messiah, and I am not the great prophet Elijah. Nor am I a prophet." John says that he is one who is pointing to Jesus and calling people to prepare to receive their Savior. Did you notice that John doesn't really say who he is? John is saying that what is important is not him but the one who is coming after him -- Jesus.
The day will come when you will have a driver's license. It will help to identify who you are. But it is only part of who you are. Like John the Baptist, we have a more important identity. We too are to be pointing to Jesus. As children of God, we are to help others prepare for Jesus. We do that be telling others about the birth of Jesus and telling others that Jesus loves us so much that he came into our world, and his love led to Jesus giving his life for us.
So who are you? You are a child of God telling others about the love and saving work of Jesus.
Closing Prayer: Let us unite our hearts together in prayer. Lord Jesus, help us to prepare our lives to receive you every day as our Savior. Empower us to tell others about your amazing grace that claims us as a part of your kingdom. Prepare us Jesus. Amen.
