You Are Invited!
Children's sermon
Object:
birthday invitation
The Point: Jesus asks us to join God's family and how we respond is important.
The Lesson: Welcome, boys and girls. Thank you for coming forward to share this teaching moment with me.
Yesterday I received a special note in the mail. I brought it with me this morning. It's a birthday invitation. I love to go to birthday parties. How about you? (get responses) It is fun to be with friends and to play games. (get responses) Eating cake and ice cream isn't so bad either. (get responses) Finding a special birthday gift to give is fun too. And it is always exciting to watch the birthday presents being opened. (get responses)
When I receive an invitation to a party, I always let the person who is planning the party know that I will be there. When I go, I wear something nice so that my friend will know that I think his party is something special.
In this morning's gospel lesson Jesus tells us a story about a king who sent out wedding invitations to his friends to come and celebrate his son's wedding. Sadly his friends found other things to do. So the king invited everyone, the good and bad alike. The banquet hall was filled. But then the king noticed that someone came to the banquet wearing dirty clothes. He wasn't serious about honoring the king's son. He had to leave.
Did you know that the Bible is filled with God's invitation to you? The Lord invites you to come and celebrate his great forgiveness and love for us. Like the story that Jesus told this morning. We each have to accept the invitation and go to the banquet that God sets. We go to God not in our own power but in the forgiveness and love of Jesus. And then Jesus clothes us in his grace.
The next time you receive an invitation to attend someone's party, remember that God your Father in heaven invites you to join his celebration and to be clothed in the love of his Son Jesus.
Closing Prayer: Let us hold hands and unite our hearts in prayer. Lord Jesus, as we hold hands we are reminded that you invite us all to be a part of your family of faith. Help us every day to respond to your invitation and to wrap ourselves in the grace of Jesus. Bless our children in the hope and promise of salvation in you Jesus. Amen.
