You are Jesus -- that's for sure!
Children's sermon
Object:
An owl representation. Make a “who am I” game.
Simon Peter answered, “You are Messiah, the Son of the Living God.” (v.16)
Good morning girls and boys,
How are you this lovely day? If you ask me “how am I ?” -- I would say “splendid!” And one reason why I am “splendid” is because you are here. And because God is here too.
Now I have a question for you. What does an owl say? (have children guess) Yes. Whoo whoo. Ever heard an owl say “whoo whoo?” Could be scary. Could also be charming.
I have an “owl hoot” for you this morning. It's from the bible. One day Jesus asked his disciple “whoo whoo” he was? The disciples had been with Jesus for a while and it was time for clarification. Jesus asked, “who, who do people say that the Son of Man is?” By Son of Man Jesus meant himself. (Draw or use a prepared visual aid of a clock face with no numbers and one hand. At five spaced points write on the face -- John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, prophet, Messiah) (As you speak have the hand point to the appropriate character.)
The disciples answered Jesus' question about who Jesus really was with many ideas.
“Some say (point the hand to each answer) a great prophet, the baptizer -- John, Elijah, Jeremiah.” Then Jesus gave an owl hoot to the disciples, “And who, who do you say I am?” Simon Peter said firmly “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.”
(place pointer towards the Messiah on the “who am I” game face)
When someone asks you children “who is Jesus?” what would you say?
You might say “Jesus is my friend. Jesus is God. Jesus is my Savior. Jesus is one who loves me and watches over me.”
It's a great thing is to say and believe what Simon Peter said and believed.
“Jesus, you are the Messiah” (which means anointed one of God), “the Son of the Living God.”
Prayer: Dear Jesus, we know and believe who, who you are. You are our friend and our Savior. Thank you. Amen.
