Silly Putty and the Sunday comics
Hello! It's good to see you again. (show them the Silly Putty) Do you know what this is? Silly Putty! It's great stuff. Who has played with Silly Putty before? (show of hands) What are some things that you can do with it? (listen) You can bounce it, stretch it and make it into funny shapes. One of my favorite things to do is use it to make pictures. (show them the comics) See this newspaper? Watch what I can do. (press the putty into a flat disc and press it firmly onto an image on the paper; check to see that the image transfers and then hold it up for them to see) Neat, huh?
Let me read today's verse for you again. "Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me." In this verse, Jesus is talking to his disciples. Remember them? They helped Jesus do his work. Jesus wanted his disciples to understand that when people welcomed them they would also be welcoming him. They were Jesus' messengers, just like he was God's messenger. When people saw them doing Jesus' work they would also be seeing Jesus -- they would be seeing God.
When you look at this (hold up the Silly Putty picture) you can see the Silly Putty, but you can also see the image that's been pressed onto it. The disciples were kind of like Silly Putty. You and I are like Silly Putty too. When we get close to Jesus he kind of presses himself onto us and begins to rub off. The closer we get to him the more we will begin to act like him. When that happens, people can't help but see him when they look like us. He is with us, and God is with us too. When you do good things you are showing others the good things of Jesus Christ.
Prayer: God, help us look like you and do your work. Amen.
