Your Greatest Treasurer
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
a piggy bank
The Point: Your greatest treasure is not laid up on earth but in heaven
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls. Thank you for joining me as we share God’s word together. This is my piggy bank. (show the piggy bank) Yes, I have a piggy bank. I think everyone should have one. When I come home at the end of the day, I place my pocket change in this bank. At the end of eight to ten weeks I have saved nearly $50. Sometimes I put it in a savings account in the bank. Sometimes I use it to purchase something I really want or to do something special with what I have saved. It is important to develop a habit of saving. Your habit of saving now will grow into a means of support for the future.
As important as savings is, it isn’t where our most important treasure is. Jesus tells us in our Bible reading that our greatest treasure is in heaven. What we have on earth can rust or break. What we have on earth can be lost or stolen. Jesus said, “Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” You might think that Jesus is telling us not to save. No, I think Jesus wants to have a habit of saving because that’s being a good steward of what God provides for us. Jesus wants us to realize where our greatest treasure is, not here on earth but in heaven. Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
What is our greatest treasure? Is it what is kept in this bank? (let the children answer) No. Our greatest treasure is Jesus. Jesus alone gives us forgiveness and the grace to forgive others. Jesus alone gives peace in the midst of storms and shelter in the turmoil of life. Jesus alone guides our steps and makes us good stewards of earthly treasurers. Jesus alone can give us eternal life. Understanding that Jesus is our greatest treasure will keep our hearts in heaven. Get into a habit of saving but never lose sight of your greatest treasure, Jesus.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hands and hearts together as we pray. Gracious Lord, you have so much love for each of us. You truly are to be treasured above all earthly treasures. We place our lives in your gracious hands. Even as we look to you, our Savior and Lord, help us to be good and faithful stewards of all we have. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
