You're Safe!
Children's sermon
Object:
A baseball or softball home plate (actual or facsimile)
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.” (v. 28a)
Good morning little sheep,
Have you ever been called a little sheep or a little lamb? (children respond)
For me, to call you a little sheep or a little lamb, is my way of saying, “you are a part of my little flock. Actually you and I are a part of Jesus' little flock.” How great is that?(children respond)
A flock is a group of beloved sheep and lambs. Protected, fed and loved by the good shepherd Jesus.
Oh look what I have! (show baseball or softball home plate) What is it? (kids guess)
(congregation guesses)
You're right! It's a home plate. And why am I showing you this home plate as an object lesson? (children may respond)
When you play baseball or softball and you hit the ball way out in center field — you run, run the bases fast. First base, second base, third base, and finally you slide into home base.
The umpire shouts “Safe!” You are safe. You are not out. You made it. Home run!
Everybody gives you a high five. Safe!! (applause)
When Jesus says to his sheep and little lambs, “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.”Jesus says, “You're safe! Not out! Safe.”
No ravenous wolf nor wily coyote will grab you, drag you away and eat you.
No, no, like a nimble and perceptive umpire, Jesus says, “you will never perish.”
Children, little lambs, we get to trust Jesus promises. We trust Jesus will protect us from all danger and evil that may threaten us.
Are you sometimes afraid? (children respond)
Do you sometimes feel like you are “out?” (children respond)
Take this and repeat after me, “I am safe. I am safe. Yippee, Yippee, Yippee!”
Prayer: Shepherd Jesus, thank you for keeping us your flock secure, saved and safe. Amen.
