You've Got A Friend
Children's sermon
Object:
A toy sailboat
“When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth;” (v. 15a)
Good morning boys and girls,
I am so happy to see you this morning, because today is a very special day. We call today, Pentecost, in the church calendar. Can you say this big word -- Pentecost? (children recite – Pent e cost) We celebrate Pentecost because a very important friend came to the disciples. This friend is called the Holy Spirit.
Before Jesus died he promised his disciples that this special friend, the Holy Spirit, also called the Spirit of Truth, would come as a friendly friend. This friendly friend would walk alongside of Jesus' followers. As a friend, the Holy Spirit would help the disciples, and us too, see, and understand the truth.
The Holy Spirit is like an invisible power. Put this sailboat into the water and it just sits. Let a wind blow on its sails and the sailboat sails. You are the boat. Our friend, the Holy Spirit, is the invisible wind.
Suppose I told you to lift this heavy ________ (selected object) and carry it for a mile.
It would be very hard wouldn't it, if not impossible? Suppose I told you to select a strong friend to help you -- a friend with muscles and energy and power. Then you could do it!
The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, as your friend, enables you to do something you ordinarily could not do alone.
Friends are like that. They help you. They make you happy. They can tell you right from wrong. Friends can help you with your life.
Best of all, this Pentecost friend came to you when you were baptized in Jesus name.
So your baptism by the Holy Spirit of truth, becomes your spiritual birthday. Happy re-birthday! You've got a friend!
Prayer: Thank you God for now we all can say, “I've got a friend.” I have power like the wind. I have a companion who will always lift me up and help me. Amen.
