The attention of the world...

The attention of the world was riveted on the Arctic during August of 2000 as the Russian navy frantically worked to rescue possible survivors from its submarine, Kursk, following an accident on maneuvers. Over 100 sailors perished following an explosion in the torpedo room. For days their fate was unknown as after the accident the submarine plunged to the bottom, over 300 feet below the surface. Tapping noises heard by the ships overhead produced this uncertainty.
In the days that followed rescue units from a variety of nations converged on the site to attempt rescue, but to no avail. During the desperate days people around the world waited and prayed as the hour approached marking end of the time that oxygen might remain for any possible survivors. There was no doubt that should any have been retrieved, there would have been great celebration for the sparing of their lives from certain death on the bottom. Despite the fatal outcome, we are reminded of the precious nature of human life and the celebration when deliverance occurs.
