August 14, 2003, brought the largest blackout in North American history. Over 50 million people throughout the northeastern U.S. and Canada were without power for hours and, for some, days. I was driving in northeast Ohio and was amazed at how much traffic was affected: traffic lights weren't working, street lights were out, police were everywhere and traffic was almost at a standstill, even on the interstate highway -- all because the lights were gone. Yet, when the power came back on, things returned to normal quickly.
