On August 6, 1945, at 8:16 a.m., an American B-29 bomber dropped the world's first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. With the force of 15,000 tons of TNT, the blast produced an instant temperature of 5400øF. Some 80,000 people died in the blast. By the end of 1945 the death count had reached 140,000. Amazingly, Hiroshima not only rebuilt, but today stands as a city of peace. Each time a nuclear weapon is tested, a telegram of protest is sent to the leader of the testing country signed by the mayor of Hiroshima. In the peace park, established in the city, a flame burns and will be kept burning until the world is free of nuclear weapons. In a real sense, those who wept, now are not only comforted but strive to eradicate those machinations which produce weeping.
